Welcome to the Institute! We encourage you to grab your beverage of choice, sit back, and get familiar with our community.
The Institute was designed for those of you who are interested in the prevention of violence, the protection from violence, and research into violence. It is a refuge, where quality information will be exchanged and new relationships will be built.
We recognize there are many of you who have served in careers where part of the primary responsibility involves dealing with violence. We welcome you and hope you feel comfortable here amongst your peers.
We know some of you have been through a violent encounter, and it may have made a deep impact with far-reaching consequences. We hope you will find the information and support you need here.
In addition, we recognize some of you need information and resources to deal with the evolving geo-political nature of terrorism. Others of you have a need and interest in personal safety for yourselves, your family, or the employees of your organization or company. We are extending the welcome mat to all who are interested.
Traditionally, people who are interested in information related to personal safety and security turn to the field often referred to as the safety and security industry. This field has served multiple purposes for many years. However, the industry as we know it has a checkered reputation. This industry hosts bodyguards, private uniform security guards, defense contractors, executive protection agents, retail theft specialists, and a variety of self-defense, tactical, and security training. Unfortunately, it has become very difficult to differentiate the credibility and quality of these people.
We have reached a point in research and technology where we can be reasonably certain of the outcome of many variables. As an example, we know from years of research that 85% or more of self-defense shootings occur in low light or darkness. Why, then, do many states require a shooting skills test in which there is no requirement for low-light shooting? Generally, we have found the traditional safety and security industry has long been out of step with the realities of research and disconnected from real life. That is our driving motivation in the Institute: to present relevant, realistic, and practical information.
The Institute is built upon years of respectable research in areas of violence, human behavior, science, physics, and common sense. We welcome your involvement.
